TRANSITION FREE PRESS
Calling All Transition initiatives, Groups and Individuals! Happy new
year everyone! The first ‘proper’ edition of the Transition Free Press is
fast approaching publication and we need YOU to support us. That’s all
those Transition Initiatives, related groups and individuals out there!
The editorial team, contributors, business and distribution
departments have been working full-on over the past few months (did
we just go through Solstice 2012 and Christmas?), commissioning,
writing, collating, interviewing, proofing, editing, picture researching
and making connections with the Transition network (small ‘n’)
preparing this unique paper for its release on February 1st.
Why do we need another printed paper in the world? Because the
issue you will hold in your hands and read from cover to cover on the
train, the bus, the sofa or the toilet, contains reports and stories you
just won’t find anywhere else in print media. Stories, from the
dedicated transition groups and individuals working towards the
energy-leaner future that for some is already making its presence felt.
This is the paper where you see you’re not alone in making those vital
steps towards a more collaborative, less destructive way of life. Read
the latest on the gift economy, food and austerity, how communities
are standing their ground against fracking and facing land rights
issues. Discover what climate change scientists are really saying about
carbon levels in the atmosphere and find out how to get local with food
growing and production. We’ll even be introducing an agony column
for those times when we all feel lost in transition.
If you are a transition initiative or community group who would like to
distribute a bundle of Transition Free Press papers, see details
here: http://transitionfreepress.org/distribution/
Or support us on the Buzzbnk crowdfunding platform,

Fighting for a Frack Free Future There’s a growing trend in the
production of hydrocarbons. Having taken a lot of the ‘easy’ stuff out
of the ground, we’re now moving on to ‘unconventional’ sources but
their extraction comes at a high risk to the
environment. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/guestblogger/

HIGH STREET WEEK Derby, beneath us, around us and yet to be
? Standing on the dark slate tomb of some long-forgotten eighteenthcentury
family, (children dead in infancy, parents living no more than
30 or 40 years), our bright red and stainless steel community apple
press looked, even to us, a
little…well…. »incongruous”. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/

I Only Came in For Bread One thing which soon becomes apparent
while working on the checkouts, is the number of people who say that
they bought more than they came in for. Not just a few, but I’d guess at
least three-quarters of those who actually talk to
you. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/mandy-meikle/2012-

Not a Transition High Street? It is no wonder really that Transition is
quite attached to high streets. Not only are they centres of community
they are also most closely associated with small market towns, such as
Totnes and Kinsale, which is where the Transition model
originated. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/kerrylane/

Totnes High Street The High Street, as source of livelihoods and jobs,
basic provisions and luxuries, business and investment deal making,
plays an incredibly important role in the local
economy. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/jay-tompt/2012-

TRANSITION COMPANION WEEK 4 – BUILDING
Real Life, Real Incomes – Creating Social Enterprises Over the last
few years, Transition Initiatives have been looking at how to get
economically real. Formulating a response not only to climate change
and the need to stop using oil, but equally to financial crisis and the
need to show what an economic alternative would look
like. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/sara-ayech/2012-

Jam, Jargon and Journalism SPARE a thought for the reporters of
today. Rather than roving their patch, getting the craic and gathering a
rich array of tales, they find themselves stuck in an office, chained to a
screen. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/catriona-ross/2012-

Plugging the Leaks The coin you see below was the Lancaster Half
Penny issued in 1794 at the behest of a Mr Ecclestone, a local trader
and eccentric, a copper coin which was not currency but a token
tradeable in the local
area. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/stories/carolinejackson/
